Call for applications: bCurrent Performing Arts offers month-long theatre devising workshops for young creatives
Toronto, Ontario, December 19, 2022 - bCurrent is thrilled to announce the inaugural application call for Reclaiming Black Canadian History, a month-long theatre intensive for creative and imaginative youth between 14-18 years of age. The jumping off point for these workshops will happen after the participants watch the digital production Meet Chloe by Cameron Grant. Inspired by the life of Chloe Cooley, an enslaved Black woman who was the catalyst for John Graves Simcoe introducing the Act Against Slavery in Upper Canada, Meet Chloe is a digital performance that centers around three grade 10 history students during the covid-19 pandemic. As a result, this show takes place entirely on Zoom during one History class period.
Running February 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th, inside the bCurrent studio at Artscape Wychwood Barns (MAP), this workshop series will involve research, creative writing, acting, storytelling through the body, and creating sound through the voice and body. This program offers selected participants a unique opportunity to develop their own artistic process and creation, informed from the guidance of a Lead Artistic Facilitator. Participants will research Black Canadian historical figures and over the month of February will find ways of creating short theatrical pieces based on their learnings. The workshops will culminate in a presentation for friends and family.

Young creatives and imaginatives between the ages of 14-18 are encouraged to apply today to be a part of this exciting and self-actualizing experience. Selected participants will learn from the talented and accomplished, Yvonne Addai, who played the lead, Chloe, in Meet Chloe. Yvonne will lead in-depth and contemplative discussions, while also facilitating playful and engaging participatory exercises.
Participants should be ready to think, engage, and move.
